The Serpent Column
Serpent Column

The Serpents Column which is 8 meters long is formed by the heads of 3 snakes tangled on each other formed the feet of a cauldron. In the coils of the column, the names of 31 Greek city states are inscripted. These 31 Greek cities constructed The Serpent Column by melting the bronze trophies they acquired from the defeated Persians in the 5th century B.C. . It was originally erected in the Temple of Apollo in Delphi ( 479 BC ).

It was moved to Istanbul by the Emperor Constantine the Great in 324 . It was later converted into a fountain in 1702. Despite the fact that the head of the serpents were lost , one of the serpent heads is now in the Archaeological Museum of Istanbul.
